Title:Kanojou ni totte Takaramono
Ribon Comics, 1997
Yay, yay yay, random cute Ribon shoujo manga fun! This is another volume of short stories, all of them cute and fun and romantic and silly. The art style is very detailed and fun. Everyone has the usual huge Ribon manga eyes, though the features and hair look a touch more angular than I am used to seeing from Ribon. Then again, I am probably hallucinating that. I bought this at a time when everything else in my stack of books to get were dark, serious, angsty Asuka comics. I figured this volume would lighten up all of those a little bit. It worked. This is a nice contrast 😀
The first story is the one with the characters on the cover. It is about a girl named Tange-chan, who really likes a boy in her class. His name is Hajime-kun. She is not shy about liking him. She happily runs up to him and is very enthusiastic about the news that they will be in the same class together for the new school term. Unfortunately, Hajime-kun is a very surly boy, and not very nice to Tange-chan. He ignores her, walks off while she is talking, and is generally really rude to her. Tange’s friends can’t believe she can like a guy like that, but Tange doesn’t give up hope. She remembers a time several years ago when she was sitting alone on a bench and feeling very sad and Hajime-kun apprached her and gave her a bouquet of flowers. His father is a florist and says that a bouquet fo flowers is something nice to have when you are feeling down. The flowers really cheered up Tange, so she knows that Hajime-kun is not as surly and mean as he pretends to be. Tange is very determined to be close to Hajime!
Another cute story involves a girl named Chie, who is on her school’s volleyball team. She loves the sport, but she has a problem- she is very very short. It really bothers her, and to make it worse, a boy in her class, Hazuki, is always making fun of her, calling her “Chibiko”. That’s sort of like calling her “Shorty”. A volleyball competition is coming up, and Chie is passed over when the coach selects who will participate. This crushes Chie, and really makes her lose hope. However support and inspiration to work harder and not give up comes from an unusual place! The next story is sort of a reverse situation about a 16 year old girl who manages to motivate a classmate of hers into playing basketball again. The heroine in this one is adorably genki and somewhat violent ^_^ However, she has a bad habit of being hit in the head by speeding basketballs. Poor thing!
