If you like HanaKimi, you will probably like this series 😀 It follows pretty much the same format and general plot, but it is still a lot of fun. There are enough differences to make this worthwhile. I almost passed this one up until I noticed the picture on the back cover. It’s basically the same pic that is on the front, except she has short hair and is dressed as boy on it. That made me realize ‘hey, there just might be crossdressing in this!’ heh ^_^;; Sure enough, there is crossdressing aplenty. This takes place at yet another of those boarding schools that seem to exist all over Japan, at least in shoujo manga land.
This series starts off right away with a common shoujo manga plot device– the hero saves our heroine from Certain Vehicular Doom! They are strangers at the time (and VERY rude to each other), but little do they know that they will soon have a much closer relationship! The heroine is TAKANASHI Momoko, a girl who has an older twin brother, Akira. Trouble begins for Momoko when her brother suddenly runs away to pursue his dream of becoming a camera man, leaving Momoko to face the wrath of their parents. In particular, Momoko suffers the crazy scheming of her mother, who decides that Momoko must take Akira’s place! You see, the family had worked hard to get Akira into this elite boys high school, and if he doesn’t show up when school starts, he will lose his spot there. Momoko’s mother gleefully chops off Momoko’s hair and packs her off to that school to act as Akira while the family searches for him. Parentally endorsed crossdressing doesn’t happen that often 🙂
So Momoko attends the boys school in drag, and naturally her roomate ends up being the rude guy who saved her before. His name is ITOU Kunio. He is a serious, studious (and incredibly hot) guy. ^_^ He immediatley recognizes Momoko- at least he realizes she resembles that girl he ran into before. Of course, he thinks it must be ‘Akira’s sister, and doesn’t realize that ‘Akira’ is not quite what ‘he’ seems. As for Momoko, for someone trying to pretend to be a guy, she doesn’t do a very good job at it. She freaks out over various things, such as seeing Itou’s naked chest. She also acts a bit girly.
Momoko’s life at the school is filled with all kinds of interesting events and people. There is some tension brewing between her and Itou, and her secret may not last for long! Momoko is cute, and her being a ‘guy’ is not enough to stop some of the guys at the school from taking an interest in her! Wacky hijinks ensue as Momoko struggles to maintain her secret. This is a great series. It’s cute and funny, well-drawn, and touching! As I write this, there are 5 volumes published.
